Beer is one beverage with quite a long history. One of the oldest drinks which is still being produced today, beer can be found in nearly any restaurant and at every bar in town. One thing that many people will not stop to consider, however, is that beer can be made from the comfort of their own homes. When someone takes the time to carefully craft their own batches of beer, the beer can become much more enjoyable to them because they know that they made it with their own efforts.
This will become a great hobby for a number of people as it is something which they can share with a group, allowing their friends to experience the benefits that home brewing can bring.
Only four basic ingredients go into any batch of beer which is made. Without water, barley, hops, and yeast, no batch of beer would ever be produced. Every different sort of beer is made out of these four basic ingredients, the only difference comes in the amount of each which is used, in conjunction with the amount of time that it is left to ferment. Types of ale will generally be fermented for about 21 days, while typical lagers take about 35 days.
Putting these ingredients together is not all that it takes, however. Each ingredient must be purified to make sure that it is of the highest quality. Inferior ingredients will not only make the beer taste bad, but it could completely ruin the batch in general. All water that is used must be purified and all of the barley must be inspected for imperfections in its quality of growth. This barley will then be passed through a pipe, which takes the grains which are used and adds water. This makes the grains release their sugars, which helps with the fermentation. After this, all of the grains are mashed to help release the starches and this will begin the fermentation.
Once the mix is finished, it is filtered and more water is added to the mixture. It helps to remove all of the sugars from the grains, which is a very important step. After this, the liquid is boiled for around 90 minutes, helping steam to circulate around the mix. Hops will be added at this point to add the characteristic taste of beer before the mixture is drained and filtered once more. At this point, the yeast is added and the mixture is placed in a cool place for the fermentation process to take its course over time. After the beer mixture has been in fermentation for a long enough amount of time, any necessary flavors are added to the beer before it is able to be enjoyed.
